Extensive Reading - Model 2 - Strange Child

The Strange Child 

As mentioned in the introduction, couples intending to marry, by custom, meet each other’s families.  Linda, against custom, went ahead and married Emeka without meeting his family.  A decision she was to regret.  After three years and with a child, she decided to visit his family even though it was against his wishes. What she found out however was most disturbing. The author reminds us that people can change after they marry, especially if they begin to regret the circumstances.  In the story we are reminded that there are good reasons for following marriage customs.

The Evening Train When Keshito said: “Then you can go without me,”  I was moved. He was letting his son go but his son was also surprised when he said, ‘I cannot father, can I?’  I think the old man didn’t intend his son to leave.  In the end, Karthik did leave and it was too late to stop him.  I think that Karthik would not have left, so I understood from reading the story that in this rural society, family bonds are very strong but also, his father really needed him to stick around.  He could not survive on his own.  I guess the writer wanted us to think about the strong pull of the city, and the huge numbers who leave the countryside only to live in terrible circumstances in the city slums.  Karthik said, I’ll be rich, but I doubt this could happen.

Extensive Reading - Model 3 - Luck of Four

The luck of four Samy spends all his income on lottery tickets.  He lives on luck and often wins. On this day he gives a lottery ticket to Chai, his friend, but he is not happy about it.  His friend has pressured him into it saying: “I’m not your good friend, ah? I always give you tea.”  His lucky number, 4, stands for ‘death’ in Chinese culture and he doesn’t want people to know, but it is his birthday 4/4/44.  He believes that if others know he’ll lose his luck. On this day, a day he was already hot he became angry with Samy and he ignored the warning signs before having a heart attack.  The writer wanted us to think about the kind of overwhelming influence superstition can have on some people’s lives.  In conclusion, we should examine our beliefs in order to be influenced by assumptions that are not true.

Treason notes Notice Kanna’s feelings towards her father change. What are some of the words she uses to describe him? Notice the difference between the word grandmother and grandmotherly.  How are they used and what is the difference.
