Extensive Reading - Model 1 - Evening Train

The Evening Train

When Keshito said: “Then you can go without me,”  I was moved. He was letting his son go but his son was also surprised when he said, ‘I cannot father, can I?’  I think the old man didn’t intend his son to leave.  In the end, Karthik did leave and it was too late to stop him.  I think that Karthik would not have left, so I understood from reading the story that in this rural society, family bonds are very strong but also, his father really needed him to stick around.  He could not survive on his own.  I guess the writer wanted us to think about the strong pull of the city, and the huge numbers who leave the countryside only to live in terrible circumstances in the city slums.  Karthik said, I’ll be rich, but I doubt this could happen.
