Extensive Reading - Model 3 - Luck of Four
The luck of four
Samy spends all his income on lottery tickets. He lives on luck and often wins. On this day he gives a lottery ticket to Chai, his friend, but he is not happy about it. His friend has pressured him into it saying: “I’m not your good friend, ah? I always give you tea.” His lucky number, 4, stands for ‘death’ in Chinese culture and he doesn’t want people to know, but it is his birthday 4/4/44. He believes that if others know he’ll lose his luck. On this day, a day he was already hot he became angry with Samy and he ignored the warning signs before having a heart attack. The writer wanted us to think about the kind of overwhelming influence superstition can have on some people’s lives. In conclusion, we should examine our beliefs in order to be influenced by assumptions that are not true.
